Debt Verification Request

Not sure you owe it, or how much? A tailored outline asking for written proof of the debt, for $109. You fill it in, sign it, and send it.

What it is

A bill or a collection letter says you owe money, but you’re not sure the amount is right, the account is yours, or who even owns it now. Before you pay, promise anything, or argue, ask for proof. We prepare a tailored outline of a calm, clear letter asking the creditor, collection agency, or debt buyer to confirm the debt in writing and send the records behind it. You fill in your details, sign it, and send it. With identity theft so common, asking for proof is a normal, sensible step.

What you can ask for

  • The amount claimed, itemized: principal, interest, fees, and payments applied, with dates
  • The original creditor’s name, and the account number with that creditor
  • A copy of the signed agreement or application that created the debt
  • Statements or a payment history, including the date of the last payment
  • For a collector or debt buyer: proof it owns the debt or may collect it, and each transfer if the debt was sold
  • For a medical bill: an itemized statement listing each service, its date, and its billing code
  • For a landlord: the tenant ledger, and the lease section behind each charge
  • For a utility: the account history, and the meter readings behind estimated bills
  • The address where you should send any further correspondence

From a collection agency?

Its notice gives a date by which you can dispute the debt in writing. Your outline includes two optional lines: one to dispute the debt, and one to ask for the original creditor’s name and address. We explain each in plain words, and you choose whether to use them. Sending your letter in time matters, and Deadline Priority can help.

Every outline

  • Asks; it doesn’t argue. No accusations, no threats, no demand deadlines.
  • Makes no admission. It doesn’t say the debt is owed and doesn’t promise payment. Don’t send money with it.
  • Asks for written answers, sent to your mailing address.
  • Is signed and sent by you, by certified mail with return receipt when a dispute date matters.

Fit Promise, Deadline Priority, and Refer a Friend

  • Fit Promise: we review your notice and checklist before writing begins. If the request isn’t a fit, we tell you why in writing and refund your fee within 15 business days.
  • Deadline Priority: send a collector’s notice with a “dispute by” date, or a due or collection date, at least 7 days away, and your outline is ready for review within 2 business days of receiving your checklist items, at no extra charge.
  • Refer a Friend: $15 off for a new client with your code, and a $15 credit for you when they book.

Not a fit

  • A lawsuit, summons, court date, judgment, or garnishment: contact a lawyer or legal aid right away.
  • Anything sent to a credit bureau, or meant to change a credit report: we don’t offer credit repair.
  • Federal student loans: your loan history is free at StudentAid.gov and from your servicer.
  • IRS or state taxes: use the agency’s notice process or the Taxpayer Advocate Service.
  • Mortgages and home loans: see our free Mortgage Hardship Letter and a HUD-approved housing counselor.
  • Court fines, restitution, child support, and government benefit overpayments.
  • A dispute-by date too close for our turnaround: mail your own short written request today.

What this service doesn’t do

It asks for proof; it doesn’t argue. It doesn’t remove anything from a credit report, raise a credit score, or settle or cancel a debt, and we never contact anyone for you. If you know a charge is wrong and want to dispute it, see Overcharge & Refund Disputes. If you owe the bill and need help paying it, see Hardship Requests.

How to get started

Send us your bill or notice through our website’s contact form. We’ll reply in writing, and you book and pay online. We don’t take these requests by phone.

We’re a writing service, not a law firm. You complete, approve, sign, and send your letter under your own name. No one can promise how a creditor or collector will respond.
