Terms & How We Work

How we work

The Response Desk™ is a writing service, not a law firm. We draft letters from the facts and documents you provide; you review, approve, sign, and send every letter under your own name. We don’t contact the other party on your behalf, give legal advice, or tell you what your legal rights are.

When a letter cites a law, regulation, or published policy, it’s drawn from public sources and included with your approval. Please confirm it applies to you. You remain responsible for any legal deadline.

Your situation review

Every dispute starts with a $125 written situation review, delivered within 3–5 business days after we receive your signed onboarding packet, payment, and documents. It recommends one of three paths: we write your letter; we write it and your own lawyer reviews it; or you should see a lawyer, and we won’t take the work on. It also lists the questions to ask a lawyer, what can happen if you don’t get legal advice, and where to find a lawyer or legal aid. If a deadline is close, tell us when you book; a 3–5 day review may be too slow, and you should contact a lawyer right away.

The codes, acts, and statutes listed in your review are from preliminary research. They may not apply to your situation, may not be complete, and may have changed. Please research them fully, or ask your lawyer to answer any questions about them.

No guaranteed outcome

We can’t guarantee how anyone will respond to a letter or what result you’ll get. Our fees never depend on the outcome, and we never take a percentage of any money recovered.

Payments and refunds

  • Situation review: the $125 fee is paid before the review begins. It is earned when the review is delivered and is not refundable. If we write your letter, the $125 is credited toward your project.
  • Orders under $300: personal letters, guided reviews, and follow-up letters are paid in full when you book.
  • Larger letters and packages: a 50% deposit is due when you sign your engagement letter, and the balance is due before we deliver the final letter.
  • Drafts belong to us until you pay in full: review drafts are for approving the content only. Every draft and final letter remains The Response Desk™’s property until all fees for the engagement are paid. Until then, no draft or letter, or any copy, screenshot, or retyped version of it, may be sent, filed, or used. Once you pay in full, the final letter is yours.
  • Paying your balance by card: if you authorize it in your engagement letter, we can charge the balance to the card you used for your deposit when your final letter is ready, after you approve it in writing. We email you the amount at least one business day before the charge, and you can withdraw that authorization in writing at any time before then.
  • If work stops early: fees are earned as work is done. If an engagement ends before delivery, you pay only for work completed, and any unearned part of your payment is refunded within 15 business days.
  • Late payments: amounts not paid when due may accrue a late fee of 1.5% per month, or the maximum allowed by law if that is lower.
  • Retainers: monthly plans can be canceled with 30 days’ written notice. The plan and its monthly fee continue through the notice period.
  • Questions about a charge: please contact us in writing first; we’ll resolve it within 10 business days.

Payments are processed securely by Stripe. All prices are listed on our service pages and confirmed in writing before work begins. By paying, you agree to these terms and to the agreements in your signed onboarding packet.

Confidentiality and privilege

Every engagement is covered by a signed NDA that keeps your information confidential. Because we are not lawyers, our conversations with you are not protected by attorney-client privilege, and no attorney-client relationship is formed.

When we’ll refer you elsewhere

If your situation involves a lawsuit, a court deadline, a criminal or immigration issue, or a decision about your legal rights, we’ll tell you so and suggest a lawyer, legal aid office, or lawyer-referral service. In those cases you pay only for the situation review.

Quotes, revisions, and turnaround

All work is quoted and confirmed in writing before it begins. Standard turnaround is 3–5 business days. Revision rounds and add-ons are described on each service page and on the Add-Ons page.
